Established as a brand in the 1970s resurrected from the pre-prohibition label Old Rip Van Winkle and now a partnership between the van Winkle family and The Sazerac (Buffalo Trace) distillery. Pappy van Winkle was a legendary figure in the American whisky trade, being a whiskey salesman and founder of The Stitzel-Weller Distillery (last distilled in 1992) who died in 1965 and the iconic photo of Pappy smoking a cigar on the label was first used in 1995.
